Stick to 30 – What it Means for Local Residents

This is a new initiative for residents of Torbay and is supported by Devon & Cornwall Police.

We all know that the maximum speed in residential built-up areas is 30 mph by law, unless otherwise stated (eg. some villages and school areas may be designated at 20 mph). Motorists should therefore drive at no more than 30 mph in our residential streets and drive carefully and responsibly. What is totally unacceptable (and against the law) are cars, vans and motorbikes travelling at speeds of up to 40 mph and even 50 mph in the streets and roads where we live. There is now a groundswell of support to stop this senseless and reckless speeding from irresponsible drivers.

However, the Police are very stretched and have limited resources, probably only just enough to cover major crime. Certainly we see no more traditional Bobbies on the beat. Local Authorities are also unwilling to commit funds to ‘traffic calming’ schemes (speed humps). It therefore falls to residents to take up the challenge and act, with the support of the police, to educate drivers and stop speeding in our residential streets.

The ‘Stick to 30’ campaign is designed to show motorists, in a dramatic fashion, that there is no place for driving at excessive speeds in our residential neighbourhoods.

Residents That Have been Affected by Speeding

If you need any evidence to support the motive behind Stick to 30 read a couple of testimonials from some very upset local residents:

“Thank you to the driver who sped up the road earlier and hit my beautiful black cat. You left him lying in the road, bleeding, broken jaw, both eyes popped out of their sockets and unable to breathe properly.

You didn’t notify anyone, you just left him there in AGONY and scared. I hope you rot in hell.”

Raising funds for the Stick to 30 Campaign

I am raising funds here to pay for signs, posters, printing etc., all of which will be needed to make a very high profile in the worst affected streets/roads in our neighbourhoods. We will work closely with the police Speed Watch scheme.

If you would like to take an active part I will arrange for you to have a hi-viz jacket and /or hi-viz vest and an ID badge and you would be part of a pro-active team in your street/road. Please also donate whatever you can via the ‘Donate Now’ button below which is a link to the Just Giving crowdfunding page.

If you would like to take just a passive role, please donate whatever you can via our Just Giving page.
